I have enjoyed many of James’s books, from his brilliant series of autobiographies to his literary criticism. He is now dying of leukaemia but, as he says, “if you don’t know when the light is going to go out, you might as well keep reading”. So this book is a collection of his writings about the business of reading. He is enormously well-read but, to my mind anyway, he does not show off about it. And he is funny, with a great gift for the one-liner.
I enjoyed this a very great deal and I recommend it to, well, anyone, really. All you need is a sensitivity to the nature of life and how it might end. Excellent.
