The Celestial Omnibus by E M Forster

An intriguing and quirky short story. It is the companion to The Machine Stops, in one of those small Penguin books. It concerns a boy, ridiculed by his parents, who come across as terrible people even in this short story (reflecting the class of the writer), who discovers a strange and fantastic omnibus that takes him to another, parallel, world.

He is accompanied by one of his father’s friends, a self-important literatus, who ends up unable to appreciate his contact with great figures from literature because he is pusillanimous.

Strange. But enjoyably so.
