Civilisation and its Discontents by Sigmund Freud

This is the first Freud I have read. It is a very readable series of essays on how the source of discontent in modern societies is rooted in human psychology. There is a lot about sexuality and how it motivates us; and about how civilization perverts those motivations. It is fascinating and very well written, albeit I was reading it in the Penguin translation.

It is, surprisingly to me, quite funny. He sometimes makes comments so ironic they could be taken at face value. Clever stuff.

It also reminds me just how incredibly influential he has been over our conception of what it is to be human and what human frailty consists in. Wonderful.
