Nice Work by David Lodge

I wanted to read some of David Lodge’s novels because I expect to be working at a university before long and he is famous for his ‘campus’ novels. This one is amusing and entertaining in a light comic sort of way, though the story is a little too whimsical.

But the characters are good – the young female academic trying to build a career as the UK calls time on the generous public funding of the universities in the 1980s; the businessman who comes to terms with the unsatisfactory nature of his own career; and various comic characters who are a bit one dimensional but the whole thing rattles along pretty well.

Good, light reading with some sardonic touches. Enjoyable.
